I was pondering today after I came out with yet another ‘Aah Bisto’ comment after enjoying the first sup of tea first thing this morning. In fact I use that famous phrase quite a lot. It’s a good slogan has lasted all this time and has been  synonymous with the gravy granules for yonks. I can think of loads of adverts i’ve enjoyed but not that many which have become embedded in UK culture.

There’s  ‘a Mars a day’, ‘because you’re worth it’ , ‘the lady loves Milk Tray’ etc but it seems to me the catchy words have been replaced with more visual offerings like an opera singer and meerkats.

Adverts, like life generally  have changed over the decades with slogans having been replaced by avatars. The Milky Bar Kid in my younger days was one of the exceptions as it had both the avatar of the cowboy and the slogan ‘the Milky Bars are on me’ !

Oh goodness me, don’t the bloomin’ jingles stay with you forever. Impossible to open a can of beanz without muttering ‘A million housewives every day….’

‘Lifts and separates’ was seared into the mind of a very young, TV advert watching Stinky.

My husband just walked past the screen, saw your post and started singing ‘john collier, john collier the window to watch’.  Who/what was john collier?

Do you remember the chocolate bar you can eat between meals?  My brother ate 7 to test the theory.

shake and vac to put the freshness back – loved that one.

What was the ‘melts in your mouth’ ad.  We remember the saying but can’t remember the product.

John Collier was a chain of tailors if I recall.
My late missus used to sing the Shake and Vac ad when she was hovering.
Didn’t Maltesers melt in the mouth ?

    Beanz meanz Heinz

The Smash ads were surreal ! I wonder how they did the voices ?

Everytime I see a tiger I think of Esso. I still have a tiger’s tail from the 60′ campaign. Brilliant bit of advertising. More recently the “simples” expression from the meercats seems to have crept into the English language. Oh and didn’t everyone have a milky bar kid in their class?

Once we lived close to an R. Whites depot, whenever one of the lads had a soft drink the chant would go up about him being a secret lemonade drinker….

“The window to watch” “Melts in your mouth”

In the states it was a slogan for M&Ms.  “Melts in you mouth, not in your hand”.

The original OXO adverts had an actress playing Mum who got every pubescent lad’s hormones in a twist. I also have a plastic keyring from the 50’s? for Esso blue paraffin.

Cannot get picture to show online! Oh it does now that there is more writing below it.

Ahh yes s/s, the Maltesers slogan was ‘ the chocolates with the less fattening centres’

‘Melts in you mouth’ slogan was for Treets.

And of course ‘A Mars a day helps you work, rest and play’

You are talking of the late Lynda Bellingham. She played that oxo role for years and featured in many TV roles. Probably best remembered for playing James Herriot’s wife Helen in the long running series all creatures great and small.

    “Tetley make teabags, make tea”

One of the most dour ads for me was for  the Homepride flour featuring a dull OxBridge sounding gent
