I’ve been having yet another good clear out just recently ( no, not colon irrigation before you ask)!  We had thirty photo albums, just ridiculous when short of storage space, so I heaved them out of the cupboard and set about reducing the  photos, to cut a long story short, my husband won’t throw anything away, not even a sock with a bloody hole in it, I’m quite ruthless and we now have just five albums and of course more storage space.  Are you a hoarder and sentimental with it, or not?

Each time we’ve moved I’ve had to be ruthless as usable space got less. Like you tigre I went through dozens of photos, some in albums, some not, I got rid of a couple of black sacks full of photos. We all do it on holiday, take dozens of photos of the same view! I have a rule now with most things, other than really sentimental value things, that if it hasn’t seen the light of day for 2 years then it goes! Mr. F  was quite happy for me to do this but it was an entirely different story when it came to his workshop! “It might come in handy” is a favourite phrase

Mind you there are still about 15 boxes up in the loft from our recent move that have yet to be opened and it’s our eldest daughter (an avid hoarder!) that has said about some of the items within “Oh you can’t get rid of that/those! (She’ll regret it when we pop our clogs and her and her sister will have to sort through it all!!)

You did very well to reduce that many albums to five tigre!

Yes I too am a hoarder of things that I really really like and love to display around my home. I had loads of photos and so many were curling at the edges thru age and handling so I cut around the shapes of the people in my favoutite ones and ended up with  hundreds of them, then made a collage of them , placed them on an old pine map chest that I have and put a huge slab of heavy glass on top so all my pics are now on display for me to look at all the time- its actually really effective but I keep sitting on top of the chest and the glass moves ever so slightly so static has moved all the photos in various directions and I have to find someone to help me lift the heavy glass and then lower it very gently after re placing the photos.

I love old mirrors where the silvering has “gone” in places so I keep an eye out for them at vides- one of my favourites is an old wardrobe door from a brocante (very cheap!!!) and the silvering has mottled on it. Looks good but I am now having to curtail my favourite buys as the house is starting to look like a brocante.

I am watching Escape to the Chateau as I type this and I am convinced that Dick only married Angel because I was busy buying old mirrors at a Brocante and didnt turn up for our date

Yes I am sentimental about things around me in my house, love using them and seeing them in my home but I do wish I had turned up for that date !!!!!!!!!!!!

I only keep the bear minimum of stuff. Nothing in my loft. Hate clutter etc.

So much easier moving out of my house in France this way. Less to transport and less to find homes for again!

I’ve also come to realise recently, that too much ‘stuff’ everywhere, is so much work for family to sort through, when you pass away.

My ex husband died suddenly and unexpectedly 3 weeks ago. Me and my 3 children have found it so difficult not knowing what to do with all his stuff. So much we had to painfully throw away, but no good to us or anyone. Very difficult to do. I told my children that they wouldn’t have that worry with me. I keep only what’s essential and nothing else

I find chucking things out very therapeutic, but have been known to wish I hadn’t with the odd thing, you’re quite right, Fruitcake, your girls will probably wish they’d let you get rid of some things they don’t want you to at the moment! I think downsizing sometimes gives you no choice. I was extremely strong with the photos when getting rid, we hadn’t looked at the albums for a few years, as you say, so many of the same thing, they had to go.

C’mum I like mirrors that have slivered a bit and I like your idea with the curled up photos, it’s a shame not to have photos on display, to corporate them on to furniture is a great idea.

Blue, how different siblings can be, does your sister ever try and encourage you to clear things out, in the way of offering to help? Hope you’re feeling better, I think I can speak for most on the forum in the fact that your company is being missed! :rose:

Very practical, Pumpkin, after our last move and the vast amount of furniture etc we had to off load I’d agree with that sentiment.

What did you do with the photos you got rid of.  I really do have at least a thousand and know they have to go, but the thought of burning them gives me the creeps.  It’s like burning our history even if it is a crap history!!  Our house is really small and I keep putting things away (roof) as I am fed up cleaning them, but I am determined to start doing car boots this year as things have got to go.  So, yes I am sentimental or possibly just mental.  Sure to come back from the car boots with some new junk.

Six months after the house move the garage/sous-sol is still clogged up with boxes full of everything but te kitchen sink. Problem is that the last place was two flats plus ‘er indoors had a houseful of stuff when she moved in a few years back.

Clearing and sorting stuff will start as soon as I can get the boss motivated !

I’m sure the majority of the stuff will end up at Emmaus or similar depots.

I’m a ‘chucker outer’! Don’t have any photos of anyone in the house. Loathe ornaments. I am most definitely a minimalist.

Strangely enough I have been up in the grenier sorting through the boxes looking for some certain pictures that I wanted to hang now that I have a few walls decorated to put them on, did a bit of re-arranging as I took some things out to condense the boxes – still didn’t find one particular thing I was looking for and still have at least four boxes of photographs, boxes of pewter, boxes of Mr.F’s model cars, boxes of TY beanie bears, boxes of bric a brac  &  more…………………..!!!!

    Selectively sentimental.
3 X 47 year old motorbikes that I rarely ride and loadsa photos, all supplied with the who, where and when info.
Apart from that, credit card and a toothbrush.
A childhood upbringing of just packing and going every few months to somewhere new seems to have conditioned me somewhat.
However, all my children, are ultimate hoarders.
Unable to dispose of anything that might possibly used in the near/distant future.

Pumkin..so sad ..sorry..very hard for you and your children..it’s been a tough year for you …hope the channel isles is a new happy start.

i,m very sentimental…I,ve never been able to watch a film where animals get hurt..lassie,black beauty…even lady and the tramp…I have a block about hurting animals…cruelty …

I rarely look at my old Photoes…they make me cry…but I can’t throw them away…they are the memories of some beautiful….some not so beautiful years…but they are our past.

I can tell you where most things in the house come from…from a teacup to a sofa..they represent a holiday,a memory…

So yes..I,m very sentimental….too much for my own good.

Looked up the meaning of sentimentality, and it is..exaggerated and self indulgent tenderness, sadness and nostalgia.Yikes, not exactly what I thought it meant.

Finally ditched the last of the photo albums and have bought a couple of boxes which have six small boxes within them that each hold 100 6×4 photos, so now have 1200 photos neatly stored.
