Many people are not – and they insist that the way we’ve been going to the toilet is all wrong. Not a subject that is discussed often enough, unfortunately, but have a read of this Guardian article and you might change your mind about your methods. Below is the ad mentioned in the third paragraph of the article: “This Unicorn Changed the Way I Poop”.

Yes, you can’t beat a ‘ sit up and beg’ job ( pardon the pun) they can be a bit precarious though on a bumpy old train whizzing through the jungle, believe me!

My neighbour has bowel problems, her consultant at the hospital told her to use a stool ( sorry) to raise her legs, it’s a better position to be in when on the loo.

I always remember, as a kid, my mum telling me if I had problems ‘going’, to lift my feet up and place on toilet seat! Those days….no problem  ;-)

When I was over staying with my grandchildren recently, my 6 yr old was ‘having problems going’. He asked me to pass over the foot stool so he could put his feet up. I’ve passed on the message I see    ;-)

Yes like a lot of things we have been conditioned to do stuff in a certain way. Child birth too!

We don’t look after our bodies in all sorts of ways, how many do you know that eat their meals from a plate on a tray instead of sitting at the table? Or do you do it yourself? Terrible for the digestion sitting crunched over while eating.

How many that slouch down on a sofa instead of sitting upright? Not good at all for backs. Nearly all of the French neighbours we have had over the years have only ever sat on upright dining chairs in their kitchens watching a TV, even though they have a lounge and it never ceases to amaze me how they can bend over double from the waist when gardening, even in their 80’s, without any sign of the excruciating backache that I get, so is it due to their upright sitting? Although having said that I have to sit upright because of a sciatic problem but I still get a backache!

I must admit that I haven’t enquired about their toilet habits!

I should think that a lot of Western society’s bowel problems are due to the “wrong” diet. Most folk I know with bowel problems say that it is because they have to strain to  relieve themselves. Their stools are too solid due to lack of fibre and too much salt.

Learnt from Mam and Dad 60+ years ago to poo whilst leaning your elbows on your knees.

Brings to mind of our honeymoon in Algeria. I got the Algerian equivalent of the Delhi belly whilst in the local village of Zeralda. Asked a local and was pointed towards a courtyard surrounded by houses and full of folk. The toilet was an open-air hole with no privacy at all. Did the necessaries and dipped a clean cloth into an oil barrel full of Dettol water. I caused outrage by mopping up with my RIGHT hand. Even telling them that I was left handed had no effect on their disgust.

Anyone who follows the Islamic faith would normally use the squatting position to go to the toilet. A man must not hold his willy with his right hand and the genitals and anus must be washed after going, so next time you have a ‘ knees up’ just remember that! ;-)
