Well done for this site. I put this posting on the ‘other site’ after re launch but it soon got buried in the mire of complaints. I am reposting her in the hope it may get a better response!!

I am sure I’m not alone in this situation. Having recently retired and pretty active there many things do around the house and garden to keep one pretty occupied. Problem is one cannot quite do everything either due to sheer weight or the fact that sometimes a relatively simple job if difficult to do on ones own. An extra pair of hands or a bit of company go a long way to help. Problem is that having spent most of ones time working since I came to France there has been not a great deal of time to get to know people except in a social way related to business.
What I need, and am sure there are others like me, is a Best Mate or a number of Best Mates!! As many of us are now on fixed incomes we have to fend for ourselves, and not have to pay for certain jobs to be done. One thing I am not short of is time.
So, I’m thinking of setting up a self-help group of like minded people who are happy to be a Best Mate and help each other out with things that need doing in return for company, good chat, tea, coffee, drink or two and the great feeling of having done a good turn. I would at this stage restrict this to a 50km radius of Malestroit so that there is not a great deal of travelling involved.
To give you some idea of what I am thinking of. I have loads of trees to prune and coppice but takes ages on your own, running up and down ladders, moving branches, cutting and burning!! An extra pair of hands would smooth the job out. Sometimes I need larger bits and pieces from Bricos but do not have a van so have to hire one just to get a couple of bits. It could be that you have a van and are willing to do a round robin for a number of people and we chip in expenses. It maybe that all you want is some advice which can be freely given. In return we would do something for the other. Its like a Timebank but nobody is really keeping track of time!!
The other aspect we could consider if the group was large enough would be to help those in difficult circumstances.
Anyone who wants a job doing or can offer help would e-mail me and this would then be circulated to the group and anyone can then offer their services. It may be that more than one person wants to help.
If you would be interested in taking part in Best Mates.Brittany contact me at michaelthemiller@outlook.com It only needs one or two to kick it off. If it works I could set up a separate group on Facebook!

Hello Mike & Welcome. Love this idea!! if you look at the home page this sort of system is exactly what we would love to see growing here in Brittany so you go for it and we will support you all the way! In the classifieds section there is a Help wanted section for precisely this sort of thing so you could pop your contact details in there with details of the help that you want at the moment and also suggesting people come and look at your post here. I think what we could do for now is to set up a Help Exchange section in the forum and I could put your post there and stick it to the top so people always see it, then people would have their own section for this type of system. Really brilliant, thank you so much for posting

Well, I’m more than 50km from you, but if the group grows or I can be of use anyway I’d be willing to help. I have a van, a trailer, ladders, tools etc and loads of time on my hands. It’s a good idea.

    Hi Mike,

We are going through with a purchase near Ruffiac so would be interested in joining your mutual help/mates group. Both are in our 50s and active. We are in the UK now but coming over at the end of June for 10 days. Work commitments don’t allow us before that unfortunately. I will contact you beforehand with a view to meeting for coffee maybe, if that’s ok.

Great Idea, nice to see some good initatives like this instead of the just me me me that usually appears, I am be up for helping folk out when I am at home (I work away Middle East) home is a bit far off you though (Plouray 56 for me) but like others have said if it spreads count me in, I have a good few tools lots of heavy equipment, JCB, a large trailer and the likes and always keen to help out (gratis) when I can, a cup of tea or a beer wouldnt go a miss though. :good: :good:

@ Mike Croxhall, a great community based idea, unfortunately we are unable to be involved as ours is a holiday home and we are based in the UK. We will be watching this with keen interest and if we can help in any way we will. :good:

My idea co-incided with the lauch of this site which at the time I did not know about. So if Wizard and Witchy are in agreement what I would like to do is instead of people e-mailing me and me posting the help wanted for my own area it would be best to use this site to cover all of Brittany. There have been a number of people who have said they would like to help but live too far away.

So if you want to join the best mate idea then register your interest here as others have done and then post help wanted/offered for specific things as a seprate item in this section as I have done for my roof and tree!!

As it is easy to set up friend requests and messgage though this site it seems the best way forward.

So happy this is getting interest!! I belonged to a LETS scheme in the UK which was a lovely way of getting help and being able to return the favour in some way. The Wizard still is still ploughing through a list of things to do on the site and one of those is to make the location of the user clear but in the meantime @Vegemite Kid has created a wonderful map to help us all work out where we are in relation to one another. :yahoo:

Sorry there has not been much of an update but once the summer arrives(!!) computer gets put to one side as always so much to be done.

I seem to have found myself a best mate – John. During the past couple of months we have helped each other in many different ways. He helped me cut up trees, jumped up and fixed the roof while I have been helping him with all the machnations of moving to France buying house etc. We have had a few jars also and last Sunday took him with me to local Fete de Voisins. This weekend if Fete de Canal so another excuse for a few more bottles. There are also two New Zealand couples renting houses next to him so are getting to help them as well. When his house purchase goes though he will be a neighbour and there is plenty of wwork to do to help him get place straight.

Also meeting pinkmeerkat next week as they come over to buy their house and will help them with local knowledge etc.

Hope to get to meet a few more of you in due course

Brilliant Idea!!, seen how this worked in Spain,5 guys all needing help re renovating property etc,got together and did a 5 week cycle of work for each other.
So,each week the 5 would meet up at shall I say house -one,for whatever required doing, some had different skills some labourers.
All had lunch provided at house they worked at

Week 2, off to the next mates home–etc blah.
It was amazing how much was achieved during the mates week at each property, and also the friendships that evolved :good:
This of course will work-provided everyone in group takes it seriously and is genuine.–and drinky-poos,AFTER!! :yahoo: –great fun !!.
    Good Luck
Wish, this could happen closer to Mur de Bretagne

@Mike Croxall that is great news, sorry I missed this post! Happy exploring @Pinkmeercat. :rose:
@Millisle I agree, such a good way of doing things. Hopefully more people will realise this sort of thing is possible. I did read a few weeks ago that there is already a Breton group doing something similar which is brilliant.

Well if anyone can fit a towbar (supplied) to my Vauxhall Vectra I will happily swap my time and energies. I’ m a good all rounder. I have tried to get a mechanic but other than Opel main dealer who wants stupid money I am drawing a blank.
I live in 56 but can obviously bring car to you and wait around.
    Thanks.

If you dont get any joy in your immediate area we have a very good English mobile mechanic who comes and fixes around our area. He has fitted a towbar for me in the past. I can send you his name and phone number by private message. He probably would not come as far as you but if you wanted to drive over to our place I am sure he would be happy to fit it here. His prices are very reasonable and he is fully registered but with no TVA.

I phoned Chris and he was very helpful. He confirmed that it is just about a two hour job (if you know what you’re doing of course). On this occassion he cannot assist as fully booked this week and then taking the kids on holiday so I shall continue my search. Thanks again.
