The Haka isn’t an anthem or special religion, it’s part of the Maori culture that  New Zealanders are very proud of, it’s a shame it doesn’t always command the respect that it deserves. It’s patriotic just like any national anthem.

Anyway, it’s a good excuse to poke your tongue out at someone! :yahoo:

Well I have had a conversation with friends  about this subject. They moved here from Christchurch a while back now, both rugby fanatics. What they told me makes complete sense. “Our Haka is great, we’ve been displaying it at rugby internationals for something like 50 years now but it is not sacrilege, our own anthem is though (God defend New Zealand) just as the England anthem is of course. When we play England it is now expected by us that the English fans will sing Swing low sweet chariot and it creates a brilliant atmosphere for the game, we see no disrespect but would get the hump if the fans ever sung it over our anthem. The two things going on, the Haka versus Swing low is a rugby fans dream start to an international and we love it”

I was concerned about what they thought and asked afterwards whether the same thoughts were with his fellow countrymen and the chap said, “Well no doubt some would criticise the singing during the haka but most of them would be sat at home and not taking in the superb atmosphere it creates live at the game”

And as most rugby supporters know, encroaching on the haka has been banned and they think that is partly why the fans have responded to challenging the haka with song and long may it continue. The lady made made me laugh when she said “Well its not the Spice Girls out there, or the Beatles (slightly out of date !! ;-)   ) so no reason for anyone to sit in silence and watch the intimidation by the side”

    And this from :
The All Blacks captain, Kieran Read, insisted his side would not be fazed by any responses however, either from England’s players or supporters. “We do the haka as a challenge but it is more about us connecting as a team. The opposition can do what they like,” he said. “I certainly get a kick out of it and I’m sure the crowd does as well. Whether they sing or not, it adds to the atmosphere. For me it’s a great part of the game.”

There’s a lot of rugby fanatics out there, I’m sure they all have an opinion on the subject, some in favour, some not no doubt.

Congratulations to all british teams for a win on the last day of the autumn series, if there are not too many injuries between now and february at club level,we could be in for a very high quality six nations, well speaking for the british cotrenders anyway as both france and Italy have shown a lack of fluidity and consistance in their autumn tour. I hope that you have all enjoyed the series and that your teams efforts have pleased you.

Ten minutes to daylight and I shall be carrying on chipping out the farmhouse I am working on here in the Tarn where it has just started raining a few minutes ago and looks like it shall be a very wet day.

Oh well , thats what waterproof clothes are for. As the old saying goes  –  There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad choice in clothing ;-)

    Bonne Dimanche a tous xxxx
