    Some advice please

Apparently (even tho it still has a couple of yearsto run) my U.K. issued EHIC card could only be used here for 1 year after applying for residency- I forget where I read it.

How do I go about applying for the equivilent card here in France

I have looked on the French websites and it gives everyone elses residential circumstances here except for retired pensioners

I know the French card is only valid for 2 years and I must then reapply but I would like to have one should I decide to visit another EU country next year

I would like to have one anyway as it may do away with having to pay for any treatment needed and I would then not have to worry about keeping all receipts and claiming back from CPAM on my return

    Regards

    Thanks

C’mum, I think that retired British expats have to apply to the UK for this card, telephone the overseas pensions department in Newcastle they are very helpful. I don’t know what the case will be after Brexit.

Hi,  I think it depends whether you are retired or not. I am a UK citizen with a UK  state pension. I recently applied for a new Ehic card from the overseas pension department and got it without problem. I think if you haven’t a state pension you must apply for a French Ehic card, assuming you are in the French health assurance system. This is beause if you have a uk state pension the uk pays for your health insurance, whilst if you haven’t, you pay into the french system, and that provides the cover. Presumably there are similar rules fir Irish citizens.

I am not sure if this will be of any help Cmum, but I thought I’d post it anyway.

It still states on the UK NHS site regarding this card that UK citizens living in another EU country that are in receipt of a UK state pension are entitled to a UK Ehic card. May be C’mum doesn’t receive a state pension.

Hi yes I am in receipt of UK state pension. I am nearly sure it was CPAM who said that my UK EHIC would only be valid for 1 year in France and have just read the same on a french site. They say it is because it is only to be used in the transitional period before completing residency in France. So even tho there is a bit of time left on the Uk card, I phoned and was told by Newcastle that I had to apply in the country I am now residing in (ie France) for a European EHIC card- it has a long French name but shortened to CEAM.

CPAM have an English speaking line

    0811363634

So I shall phone them tomorrow morning

There seemS to be different advice from CPAM and UK –

    Thanks for your help

If you have an S1 being in receipt of a UK state pension then it is the UK who is responsible for your EHIC but if you are resident in France you cannot use the card  in France you must use your Carte Vitale  in France The EHIC is valid in the whole of the EEA so will not be affected by Brexit if the UK goes for the EEA option

If you have a Carte Vitale because you are working or like me am an early retiree then it is France who supplies it It is called a CEAM

Anyone who says otherwise is wrong I am afraid That includes DWP et al

I shall hang onto my EHIC a while longer

    Many thanks all

You cannot apply online for a UK-issued EHIC. Instead, you’ll need to request an EHIC-E application form with the Overseas Healthcare Team. Simply call 0191 218 1999 from the UK or 0044 (0)191 218 1999 from abroad, (Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm).

Hi, it is very easy to get a CEAM card,(french version of EHIC). If you have a Carte Vitale, log on to the http://www.ameli.fr website, go into your personal area and there is an option to order one. It arrives within a couple of weeks and a few months before it expires they send you a reminder to order a new one. Or if you have a problem logging in, your local CPAM office can do it for you.

I recently applied for a French EHIC card from RAM who are my French health provider, if you are with CPAM apply to them. It arrived within 10 days and is valid for 2 years. As I am no longer resident in the UK I think I need one to visit England or any other EU country. I have a NI number so I would not be refused treatment but better to have both I think. :-)

My partner had cause to use her UK EHIC card a couple of years ago. Although we’re not yet full time Bretons we had registered with a local doctor. The service received from the doctor and Carhaix hospital was superb. She was admitted for one night and when discharged the next day, a Sunday, we took a prescription to a duty pharmacy. The following day she returned for X-rays and more examinations, blood tests followed and more medications prescribed. We paid for the medicines as we collected them. The blood tests were paid for each week for the next month. About 6 weeks after we returned to the UK, 2 bills arrived from CHU Brest for the hospital stay and treatment, these we paid by cheque.   All receipts gathered in, she phoned EHIC  and they sent a claim form. About 8 weeks later they paid about £70 into her bank. She had spent over 600 €uros. Questioned why only £70 ?, EHIC said that was all the French Health finance department would refund to them (EHIC) so that was all they would pass on to her.  Attention  the EHIC card may have got the health care needed but it didn’t cover the cost of it. But we also have travel insurance with healthcare, they refused to pay out because the original receipts could not be provided ! EHIC has them.   Rant over. Take care everyone !

You should note that you no longer apply to DWP if you are visiting France for refunds for French medical treatment You should apply o CPAM taking along all receipts ID proof of UK address and bank details You will be refunded on the same basis as if you had a carte vitale ie 70% of the costs incurred You can claim the rest on travel insurance if you have it
