I’m quite surprised that those football fans among us have not mentioned the fact that Gordon Banks died on Monday. True he was 82 yrs old so nothing really amazing about his death really I guess, but he was quite a legendary goalkeeper of his time, not only because he stopped Pele’s goal but in general (safe in the hands of the Banks of England was a catchphrase of the time) also he was a true gentleman of the sport.

    RIP Gordon

Yes a great person as well as one of the best ever goalkeepers in the World. Pele put it well and says it all really.

“I scored so many goals in my life, but many people, when they meet me, always ask me about that save. While it was indeed phenomenal, my memory of Gordon is not defined by that – it is defined by his friendship. He was a kind and warm man who gave so much to people.

So I am glad he saved my header – because that act was the start of a friendship between us that I will always treasure.”

And Pele ended with ” I have great sadness in my heart today and I send condolences to the family he was so proud of. Rest in peace, my friend. Yes, you were a goalkeeper with magic. But you were also so much more. You were a fine human being.”

He was an acquaintance of my Dad’s, way back when. He came to our house a couple of times and looking back he was a very  modest and unassuming man.

More recently he was a customer where my nephew works and he says he was always really lovely & friendly, always had time for a chat.

I wondered why he was never made a knight of the realm in the Queens honours lists – I read that he had been nominated but the nominations were misplaced (lost) by the relevant office. He was re-nominated and was under consideration for this year’s Queens birthday honours list. How sad that its now too late.

    RIP Gordon.

How nice to have personal experience that upholds what we’re given to believe about his genuine character Lippy. I believe there are probably many who are much more deserving of the accolades than some of those that receive them.
