I registered my 2015 RHD Skoda Superb with French plates last year and had the lamps adjusted by a Skoda dealer in the UK for continental driving. The control technique is due this August. I am wondering whether the adjustment made will be enough to get it through or will I have to buy new headlamps?

If they fail simply put on headlamp deflectors.

You can check the beam pattern yourself – use a wall about 3-5 metres away from the front of the car when it’s dark, if the pattern shows a kick-up to the left it will probably fail the CT. If the pattern is flat or has a kick-up to the right it will be ok.

Some diagrams from the UK mot testers manual might help here:-

    https://www.mot-testing.service.gov.uk/documents/manuals/class3457/Section-4-Lamps-reflectors-and-electrical-equipment.html#section_4.1

(For driving over here you are looking for a mirror image of diagram 3)

If you had it registered last year with French plates, surely the CT isn’t due until next year?

VK it was registered last year with French plates and being a 2015 car, it won’t need to be CT’d until four years later, thus this year. The car headlights were made ready last year to move over to France.

I brought my MGF over with me and also had a similar problem with the headlights.

The MGF headlights have a symetrical glass lens inside the headlight assembly. With a little dismantling its possible to remove these interior lenses, turn them back to front and swop left to right and, lo and behold, you have a continental set of headlights which pass the CT with no problem.

It may be worth checking your headlights. This method has the advantage that, if you return to the UK, you simply reverse the procedure.

Okay the car passed its CT today with no issues, including the lights, so it looks like you just need to get Skoda to do the adjustment and then that is okay.
