Good idea to make it a sticky topic, then it’s always at the top.

Hello, have been on this site since nearly the beginning of it and have been watching the membership grow. I think there were less than 20 members when I first joined. Seems pretty friendly and sensible so far. Thanks for the efforts of those who made it happen.
We live around 15 minutes from Pontivy and Baud (Morbihan) and have been in France for nearly nine years (my French is still awful though). I didn’t start trying to learn French until past the age of 60. We never had the option of learning French at school. I struggled with English in fact. Still I like a challenge. Thanks again for the site and good luck.

    Hello All
Used to use the other site until it changed.
Registered here to help us get local knowledge before our move to France for early retirement in 4 years when I turn 56.
We have a house just north of Lanouee forest but don’t get over as much as we like at the moment.
Learning French (well, trying to) and looking forward to moving and then travelling around Europe from our Breton base.
    Martin

Hello everybody, my name is Rincewind and I’m not sure how I got here. I was running away from something or someone, turned my head to see how close it or he was and whoosh, I fell through something and arrived here. Fortunately, I saved my hat. Unfortunately, it’s not big enough to shelter under, considering the weather in this place.

Hello. Just been told about this site so thought I might have a look. Was a member of that other place when it started in the 90’s but gave up about five years ago when it got stupid and it was no longer a discussion forum. From the map I see no other members in this neck of the woods which is the Finistère region but never mind, we are all in the same boat here. Bought my house in 1989 so many years of Brittany under my belt.

Hi everyone, we’ve been here for 11 years now and run a boarding kennels & cattery in Porcaro. This new site seems to be going really well and we hope it continues in this very friendly way. Keep up the good work. :good:

I too am a migrant from the ‘other place’. This site now seems to be the place to be, so I’m happy :yahoo:

We are currently buying a property near Malestroit, which will be a holiday home for a few years until we can retire. We’re both mid-50s and unable to afford early retirement unfortunately. My husband would jack in the job and be over there to live full-time like a shot, if I gave the go-ahead, but I’m of the ‘but how would we live’ school (i.e. cautious/spoilsport). However, in the meantime we will be going to our new house as often as possible, taking advantage of as many cheap flights as we can, so it’s all good.

    What an adventure!

Hello. I do not visit this site often, but when I do I enjoy it. I bought my house here near Rostrenen 10 years ago and moved over from Devon when I retired four years ago. We have been doing the self-suffiency thing, growing lots of fruit and veg, raising animals, doing most of the work on the place ourselves. We are very lucky to have a good circle of friends here among the English, mostly through the motorbiking scene, as we both have bikes. Also have very good French neighbours, but no French friends as yet.

Hello, Just thought i would drop in and say hello too.
I love the new site, as it’s very easy to use. I am also sure your membership will increase rapidly, I shall certainly pass the word around.

Been here four years now, created a garden (still work in progress) and a little orchard with veggie patch.it was all a field previously. Hard work but the rewards are great.
Now have 3 adopted cats and a load of wildlife visit regularly now, deer hedgehogs, squirrels, hare and foxes, plus abundant variety of birds.

I had zero French on arrival but with have all French neighbours it was a case of a rapid learning curve in a small commune of friendly Bretons. Nowhere near fluent, but i can understand and be understood.
    Best wishes
    Liz

Hello,I am also jumping ship from the “other forum” last straw was when someone told me I didn’t know my grandsons age when he passed his driving test ,just beore his 18 th birthday infact .Anyway as I ´ve been here along time (24) yrs most of my knowledge of rules and regs is probably out of date ,just like most fonctionnaires I expect !But I do know which sites to look on for info .I compete here in gundog field trials and used to do obedience competitions ,am passionate about having well trained dogs and since retiring 2 years ago have devoted my spare time (quite alot so pity my labs ) to this

Hi, I joined this site when it first went online. Much better than the “other” site. This is our 5th year in Brittany and we absolutely love it, the way of life, the people, everything. I know some things can be a bit frustrating at times but we wouldn’t change our lifestyle. (apart from having a win on the lottery then we could do all the things on the house that we want to do). At this point in time we could never imagine going back to the UK. Doing my best to learn French at the moment although it isn’t easy but hopefully one day I will be fluent.

I agree, the frustration gets overruled everytime by the joy of being somewhere so lovely :yahoo:

Hello, I’m Julie, I just found this site by accident. Myself and my husband bought in 22 18 years ago with the plan to move and retire to our dream house in Brittany. however the universe had other ideas as he sadly passed away 5 years ago before we could move. I have been holding things together since then as my son was at school still, and I have not been able to get over as much as we had done as a family before.I still have some stuff to finish with the house, and might be asking for advice from time to time. And who knows? I might be able to fulfil my dream of living in Brittany some time in the future. My son is training to be a carpenter as his dad was, and wants to finish the renovations for him, so maybe soon I’ll be holding bits of wood for him as I did before. :bye:

    Hello
I came across your forum on another site, I have lived in Brittany for 8 yrs now. The plan was to use the house as a holiday home but the more we came over the harder it was to go back, we live in central Brittany and just love it here :yahoo:

Hello fellow UB subscribers. I looked at this site to ascertain if there was anything self- sufficiency related forum or related sections. I was delighted to find a dedicated self-sufficiency forum so hello to all you wanabes like me and a heartfelt thumbs-up to those of you that have broken ground and better.

I am 58 and Bev, my wife of 40 years, is 61. We currently live in Finistère near Huelgoat but are planning to build an octagonal, straw-bale house and a similar but smaller studio on a hectare of ‘magical’ land we recently purchased in the Limousin after a 5 year search. We had our preliminary meeting with the architect last week during our first real stay there.

We WILL be going self-sufficient, off-grid for everything except a phone/internet line unless a viable alternative comes to market in the meantime. We hope to achieve 80% over-all efficiency with excess produce being sold or preferably traded.

I will be posing a plethora of questions on the SS forum in the hope that those amongst you who have useful information or suggestions to share. I will also try to help anyone posing questions I feel qualified to answer.

I look forward getting to know you all, who knows where things may lead! :good: :-)

    Hi Tom

Glad to see you have found this site, it’s brilliant. You moved us back to Sherborne from Guiscriff in 2008, great service, recommended.
