I recently bought a cheap mountain bike to help me recover from health issues. The gears are not selecting properly. The front 3 cogs next to pedals are OK, on the rear cogs I can only get the chain on to the largest and next to largest cog. I have tried tightening the cable and have fiddled with the adjustments, but I know next to nothing about them. Is there anyone nearby who would have a look at it and try and get the gears working for me please (between Guern and Guemene Sur Scorff, 56)

Forgot to say, it’s 15 speed shimano, with twist grips on the bars.

its a case of adjusting the Derailieur from inner to outer, start with the driving cog ( at the pedal) in the centre, and adjust so that each click moves the unit in a bit,

technically when they say 15 gears thats not really the optimum but only in theory, with the driving cog feeding 3 cogs at the rear on each of the outer and inner and the centre cog driving all 5.

I’m sure that there must be something on utube to explain it better

its not difficult just takes a bit of fiddling about

sorry I cant help more but I’m miles away

Thank you. I will have a go at that! The problem is I cannot get the chain to go to the smallest cog, as in the video. I will have another crack, with my inept sausage fingers!!

Night and day, slarti,  sorted now, a few grazed knuckles and covered in oil. But still have all my fingers. Thank you

David, if you are still having trouble contact me and I will get my son to look at it and show you some ;aintenance tips. He is a downhill racer and practically built his own bike, plus strips it down regularly to replace parts and has the tool kit……. And we are only up the road from you. :-)

That’s very kind seahorse. All gears are working correctly now, but who knows….thanks for the offer, if things go pear shaped, I will contact you.

I am pretty good downhill too – not so good uphill. !!

As an aside the basic rule stick with cassette gears (3-8 sp) now produced by Shimano and the resurrected Sturmey Archer. More reliable and easier to adjust.

Draillier gears maybe great for Wiggins and co for the rest of us they are crap! IMHO.

And I take it you are a bit more sedate than this, David…… :-)
