Toilets. Toilet facilities in places like supermarkets are inadequate and often dirty. There are often no public toilets at all in small towns. One positive result of Covid is that supermarkets now have soap in the toilets some of the time. I can’t understand why a country that is so sophisticated in so many ways tolerates the situation. It is such a fundamental thing – we all have to “go”. For people with IBS it’s a nightmare.

In the whole of France ?

Where we live , the supermarkets that we use have good clean toilets . Being of the older version of the human , we tend to plan our shopping trips to fit . :-)

Oh , yes , our small village has a public toilet too .

When our fosse needed emptying and I was having trouble finding someone to come out we had to rely on Carrefour to meet our needs.  They were clean and maintained as good as any.  The only problem was it is 30 minutes drive away.  I’m now a lot more likely to keep an eye on the level of the tank.

My goodness , things that we don’t like about …………. The weather , the reaction of the environment to humans , get used to it and be happy that it isn’t 40 degrees , we are. Be happy with what you have , ( look around the world) it can and probably will get a lot worse ! When we move from here , we will be going North , because if you see the general weather patterns in the world , the South will become uninhabitable .

    Hotter in the past Deboer.

Whine whine whine about paint. Nothing wrong with french paint, you get what you pay for. B&M sell English paint, it’s cheap and it’s crap but at least it’s English.

The problem I have with French paint is the price relative to the quality. I can buy excellent paints in certain shops but at an exorbitant price compared to the UK.

I have used Brico Depot Renaulac for many years, it’s an excellent paint. BD now sell  GoodHome which I have also found to be pretty good as well. Took me a few years to sort out where to get the right deal for the right paint. Initiately  I also felt I had to bring paint back from the UK but when you live in a damp area of France, such as the Dordogne, as we did once, I found it paid to use what the French were using, sure often a lot dearer than the English non equivalent. With Renaulac I get the assistant to mix in the colour I want and never been disappointed to be honest.

A lot of french paint is excellent if you want to do 56 coats !!

Even the Dulux products here do not have the same ingredients as the british counterpart.

There are some very good paints in France for ridiculous money but sadly the price does not dictate the quality that you are going to get, meaning some of the very expensive stuff is crap too !!

Mind you, I did paint the back of an undersink cupboard for my mum here in Wales with some paint she had got someone to pick up from wilko’s stores and that was very watery.

Sorry Jamie you are quite wrong and inline with many Brits that say the same thing. There are good paints, the cheap paints I use for mist coats without the need to use a better paint and water it down. Renaulac which we have painted three of our properties with over the years is excellent two coats maximum (after the mist coat on new surfaces. I know your terms  56 coats was tongue in cheek but then cheap French paint is just the same as cheap British paint.
I hear some artisans crying out about thistle or board finish plaster and not available here, correct, the French in general will use Lutece 2000 in L or C. It’s different. I have known several British sparkies and plumbers who grumble about the differences in materials and the way it all works. Why, obvious really, you can travel the World and see many things done differently and using different materials, now put paint in that melange, so to speak and there is the answer.

I agree that the paint that I recently used here at my mums house was every bit as bad as some of the french paint I have used so bit of a draw on that.  The other one I hear a lot of is that a lot of french plaster and jointing compound is horrendous here, which as someone who has pointed maybe thirty houses and has a bit of experience with it, I will disagree as I find the best that the uk offers is webber and for me who likes to get a perfect finish I find it just a bit to grainy-gravelly.

I painted the top of my van with a French dulux valentite (not valentine) and it was the best paint I have ever come across and it will cover many surfaces and did an amazing job on the van and was well worth the Fifty quid or so that a tin cost me :-)
