Having just caught up with the latest episode of Escape to the Chateau  where they took a trip to Nantes to Ile des Machines at Nantes

I thought it looked  quite interesting from the small snippet we saw.

is it worth a trip , bearing in mind that its just over 2 hours each way from here.

has anyone been?   and if so  what did you think?

Nantes is well worth a visit, I would suggest an overnight stay.

The Isle de Machines is well worth a visit.

You can ride on the Elephant or any other that is running that day and you need to look at the engineering and consider the thought that has gone into making the machine. there are also a lot of bars etc on that side of the river.

Another place which is well worth a visit is the Le Lieu unique an old LU biscuit factory I will give no information just go along and be surprised.

And do not forget Jules Verne was born in Nantes

Fantastic. Check what they are doing as sometimes they take some of the machines walkabout around the town.

I’d make a proper trip of it and stay over.

To ride on the elephant you usually need to book in advance which you can do on line.

YES do go  It is a unique experience but look at the website  It is very busy at times but booking in advance is a good idea Stay overnight if you can  We stayed at the OKKO Not as cheap as the chains but an excellent hotel in the centre with a free evening buffet and an excellent breakfast

We went in early October and it was well worth the visit. We did not go on the elephant and decided it was more impressive from below. Quite a spectacle when you consider the engineering. The whole site is well set out and the detail on the ‘merry go rounds’ is incredible.

You need to ride on the elephant to really appreciate how it is controlled and made.

We went to Nantes a couple of years back and as others have said it’s definitely worth an overnight stay. The elephant is fantastic!

I am sure there are many benefits to riding on the elephant but from below you can see the intricate workings of the legs and trunk and watch the mechanics of the march, the water spray and the trumpeting which you cannot appreciate from above. Either way we all agree that it is special.

Yes, the elephant is fantastic. When it goes out for its walk it will spray you! I know there is also a giant spider but we didn’t see that one. Yes, it is worth a visit.

well thanks for the replies, it seems that those that have been think its fantastic and those that havent been want to go ( like me)

we will definitely go for a visit and  on a ride if we can, and a stopover, I’ve only ever driven through Nantes or been to the airport so its another addition to the to do list.

this is one of the many things  I love about France, there are so many things to do and discover, the problem is most of them are not publicised very much and its a case of stumbling across them, it does make for great surprises  :good:

Iles de Machines well worth as visit.  Nantes alone is worth it, lovely city, voted on a few occasions as the best place to  live in /france.

Yes indeed it was Margaret and it has now been super-ceded by Rennes. How lucky are we in Brittany?
