Scotland’s just introduced this. as far as I can see it’s aimed at cheap, strong (7.5 abv ish) white cider. the only people I’ve known who regularly drink this are poor (on the dole) or poor alcoholics (as in not the one’s who can afford cheap wine/beer etc) so is it just a tax on the poor?

They had this on tv , today the average bottle is now £11.50 !!   It was cheap before!  This particular shop said they were not going to stock it.

All that will happen is that the Scotts will come just over the border and buy it in England!

Much the same as the English cross the channel and buy it in France.

The thing is,  that the very strong Cider’s and beers generally are unpallatable to the average person.

Mild fizzy strong and cheap, sounds like a winner, can you recommend a dry one?

Increasing the price three fold on high alcohol drinks like white ciders and beers will hit people with drink problems but these people need help not punishing. Alcoholics will just find another way to get their ‘fix’ and those near the border will get a regular supply courtesy of white van man. I seem to remember when I was young, metholated spirits was the drink of choice. There will soon be a supply of high alcohol drinks from dubious sources many of which will contain high levels of dangerous ingredients. If you are serious about helping people with drink problems you need people and resources on the ground not just high prices.

The powers that be are NOT interested in poeple, only the money they can extract from them!  Isn’t it also a bit two faced, with the Scotts expecting the rest of the world to buy their Whiskies, which by their nature are high strength?

apparently the Scotch Whisky Association has had a five-year effort to block minimum pricing although I can’t see how their (fairly high-end) products would be affected

The trouble is there is always pressure from certain groups to hike up prices on alcohol and cigarettes etc, often Governments can’t win! It’s a big problem in a lot of Countries.
