From an early age, 10 or 11 I think, I used to chew and pick my fingernails. Then about four years ago I decided that I ought to be able to stop because, frankly, bitten fingernails don’t look very nice (and it’s surprising how many you see here in France, often bitten or chewed to the extent that there’s no nail at all). However, I still can’t go a couple of weeks without having at least one fingernail bitten or picked too short and I regularly drive Mme VK mad with my use of a nail file – “Encore? T’es pire qu’une nana!” – because there’s always a corner that’s too scratchy, or a nail that grows faster and needs to be levelled with the others.

Any other men here as fastidious?

    Just stop !

It’s like any other compulsive habit. When you feel the urge to nibble eat a sweet or chew gum untl the habit stops being a habit.

I used to nervously bite the inside of my mouth and stopped by opening my mouth purposely which made the habit impossible to carry out. I soon got used to not doing it. Also I used to nervously grind my teeth so when I realised what I was doing I opened my mouth to separate the teeth and the bad habit soon passed.

I like to see a man’s fingernails clean and nicely manicured ( not with nail polish of course) we have a male neighbour who lets his nails grow quite long and they are shaped more like ladies nails, it gives me the creeps a bit! Have to say he’s married and very manly apart from his nails.

VK, I don’t know if she still works in Leclerc in Carhaix, an odd looking girl on the cash out, her nails were/are disgusting, bitten down as far as she possibly could have I always thought.

Pete, did you catch many flies?

Yep, she’s still there, tigre, with a haggard smoker’s face as well. How an earth can you have a good scratch with no nails? As for teeth-grinding, Mme does it in her sleep, so loud it wakes me up!

Always thought she was a miserable crow, VK, would try an avoid going to her till, rather queue longer at another.

Hate overly long fingernails, whether on men or women, they give me the shudders, but bitten to the quick nails are not particularly attractive either!

    Why can’t people be normal?

Having said that I came through customs today, there was one massive queue in the line that said EU Passports. On the left was an empty lane with its own Duane and the sign Touts Passports.

I was almost last off the plane and first in the car park.

my sister bit her nails a lot as a kid so mum got a jar of horrible tasting stuff to paint on; worked a treat as she only nibbles at them occasionally now
