A little while back I wrongly ordered some fioul from a company who I thought was the company we pay by monthly direct debit, fortunately, the bank rang to say a request for a prelevement of 850 euros had been made, did I want to pay it – “NON!” says I, so payment was refused and I immediately cancelled the order, however, I subsequently received from the fioul company a reimbursement of 850 euros paid into the bank account, an amount which we had not paid.

I rang the bank to explain and was told nothing they could do to contact the fioul company, I emailed said company to explain, have heard nothing and the money still sits in the account, which I am very careful not to spend. I could, of course, send the company a cheque for the amount but, knowing how French bureaucracy loves reference numbers, I  would prefer them to contact me first with specific instructions. Has anyone had any similar experience?

Yes, let it sit there, wait until it is asked for, as you say you could only send it to a general account, knowing the French system there is never any rush. we had a 230euros paid into our account, the bank couldn’t identify it and said it would only be returned when the transaction was reversed by the sender, the company said they needed more information, which we didn’t have, we had never dealt with the company or ever heard of them, the company never did ask for it back, that was 2 years ago, free money doesn’t get any better.

Pretty simple really , just make a” virement” to the account of the company where the money came from , with the reference of the virement that they used to put the money into your account . :-)
