I can only imagine just how many people will be put out by this news We have a friend who used to travel to and from East Midlands every two weeks. The travel to Nantes is his new option but at nigh on two hours to get there and same back, instead of just 25 minutes to Dinard.
Things will improve …covid will leave its mark but people are enterprising…companies..places will rise again with demand.
Its really frustrating for so many at the moment…me included…We would go tomorrow if it weren’t for covid..I haven’t seen my UK family for a long time…

It wasn’t just Covid behind the decision to pull out of Dinard. Ryanair and the airport have been in dispute about fees since before the pandemic…..
It will certainly make travelling back to the UK a lot more difficult for very many people, a lot of business people used that facility as well as people travelling for pleasure, it was probably one of the most cost-effective ways for them to do so.
We used it many times to go back and forth to the family in Kent (okay for us and our pockets but very stressful for whichever one of them drew the short straw to run the gauntlet of the M25 to come and get us from Stansted!)
Let’s face it, Dinard airport relying on one airline operating only one or two flights per day was never going to pay it’s operating costs.
We used to use Brest to Luton, Ryanair closed down that route because Brest communaute were subsidising Ryanair to fly there and then withdrew their funding, so O’Leary cancelled that route.
Silly really, Ryanair could have doubled their fares and still filled the flights.
Announced this morning that any internal flights that can be replaced by a train trip of under 4 hours may be ended….trained being less polluting than flights.
it’s the death knell for many small airports…sadly it will also affect other flights like the UK.
Sadly this latest idea of banning all flights under two hours will affect many …all over France…people bought second homes believing they could pick up a flight and be there quickly..bringing many areas in France to life…picking up property demand …I hope this isn’t the death knell for those areas.
Pretty bad news for us in La Manche. Our family is based in the East Mids and Dinard – East Mids was a great way to pop back for a long weekend. Also good for friends popping over.
Is the port of St. Malo still operational? (outside of Covid restrictions I mean) I seem to recall there were some problems there, if there are it’s really going to leave Brittany out on a limb.
I would humbly suggest , that with Covid , there will be more French people moving out of the big cities into the countryside , so will probably be a boom for those villages that are well connected via a rail link to Paris .
I didn’t mean without any means of transport Deboer, there are plenty of options from Rennes for a start, I was speaking of the convenience of the routes that people are used to using easily to hop back and forth, people living in Brittany would know what I meant I’m sure.

No problems apart from B.F not starting the route to Portsmouth back until after 17th May
Well, that’s good to know for those that use that method Roger, we don’t ourselves but I know a lot of people do. It all depends on what part of the UK we’re heading for and there are a lot of people that find the ferry the most convenient.
It’s having the choice that’s important isn’t it Roger? The last time we went to the UK (October 2019!!) Our chosen route because a) it’s more convenient for the kids to pick us up and b) Mr. F. feels more comfortable travelling that way ( he finds some travel stressful) was from Rennes to Lille Europe on the TGV and from LE to Ashford International on the Eurostar, our daughters live just 35 mins from Ashford, a friend takes us and collects us from Rennes. It isn’t the cheapest option by any means but we don’t go that often (not at all at the moment of course!)
Flights of under two hours…for Parisiens leaving for the weekend?honestly by the time you get to the airport …wait around…I think the train is the same.
i tried every way to get to Geneva from Normandy..train ..plane ..Bla Bla car
I much prefer driving…9 hours…if you drive direct..we prefer the small roads and a stop over….i resent paying the road tolls.prefer à bed and breakfast.
Everyone was so happy when various regional airports opened…it will move the economy ..houses etc…If they close it must have the opposite effect eventually.
Life will normalisé…will it ever be the same?anywhere…who knows?
