I read in a report that in the next 10 to 15 years, the loss of health and life in every region of the world, including Africa, will be greater from noncommunicable or chronic diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, than from infectious and parasitic diseases. This represents a shift in disease epidemiology that has become the focus of increasing attention in light of global aging.

The question asked is: Are we living healthier as well as longer lives, or are our additional years spent in poor health?

A thought springs to mind re the obesity crisis in the USA, which certain other cultures/countries are desperate to copy.
Given the huge medical advances v the obesity (which brings about many of the problems highlighted by Fruity), is the life expectancy there, over the last, say 30 years, better, worse or static.

Fruitcake from my own observations with visiting elderly relatives in care homes it seems 50-50 with older folk either being fully mentally aware or totally oblivious to what is happening around them. Unfortunately my second father-in-law went down the path of dementia and although old his quality of life was minimal. On the other hand Anne’s uncle Dave was a farmer and as slim as a rake but was Type 1 diabetic. He succesfully ran a mixed farm for 40 years!
