Yes Pete , when visiting catholic cathedrals , I always think of the poor people that had to pay for them and the rich that are buried in them or remembered with inscriptions on their walls .
Also how frail we are .
Reading back over the initial posts, as far as I can see nobody used the word tragedy in relation to the fire of Notre Dame, of course it isn’t a tragedy, it is as was said, sad for the people of France to see an historic building that they hold dear burn like that. As I contributed to the early postings about that fact I find comparing it to the absolutely tragic, devastating horror that was Grenfell quite an insult to my intelligence. All that needed to be said was ‘It’s a shame but nobody died it will be rebuilt’ I don’t think any of us needs reminding of that dreadful day or relive those awful scenes, I certainly don’t, it was upsetting beyond belief.
As I said f/c it’s a case of putting into perspective imo, hence the comparison.
Anonymous16th April 2019 at 11:15 am #468478It’s very sad, like St Paul’s being on fire would be but at least the main structure has survived. Hopefully the wonderful gargoyles too which is my overriding memory of the place. Must admit can’t remember there being a spire but it’s many years since I went…
Despite the bad damage to the Cathedral, which is bad, I can’t help but think that Paris was lucky in one respect. Can you imagine what the scenario would have been if there would have been very strong winds blowing yesterday?!
I have visions of embers etc blowing right across and onto the tops of neighbouring buildings and setting numerous appartment blocks etc alight. Now that could quite possibly have been absolutely terrible, really terrible.
Anonymous16th April 2019 at 9:22 pm #468663Good point, Gleaner. And the poor bloody pompiers certainly weren’t equipped to fight something that high, not their fault, I don’t think anybody, until now, had given thought to such a thing happening and how to deal with it. But yes, Paris was lucky indeed.
Anonymous17th April 2019 at 8:53 am #468731Already €750 million pledged to help renovate. Macron wants the building to be rebuilt in five years. Would you donate money to help with the renovation work ?
Good question Pete . Basically if you are a taxpayer in France , then you are already donating ( or will be ) to the rebuilding of the cathedral .
At the moment 66% of the ” donations” from the millionaires is tax deductible , so won’t be going into the tax box to pay for ” stuff” . If , ( and that will probably happen very soon ) the cathedral is declared a “Tresor National ” this deductible rises to 90% , meaning even more loss of tax revenu for the state , perhaps they should put the price of diesel up to compensate ?
Anonymous17th April 2019 at 9:26 am #468737I think we agree on this one Pete. Maybe the Vatican should sell some of it’s ” holy relics” to rich Arabs or Americans and donate the proceeds to pay for their building ?
