I think you are probably correct Bill. I hardly think the rest of the world is pure and it is probably a political move against Russia. That said they will certainly not have been beyond reproach.
The sad thing, as you touch on, is that it is supposed to be sport and many athletes will have trained for years and stayed clean only to have their chance snatched away by the political and monetary powers.

Agree with both of you it is an international problem.
So very sad for the athletes who are clean and worked so hard for their place. So much for government intervention.

Unfortunately sport is affected by international politics now and no longer what the Olympics were actually about.
Olympics and its media exposure was to provide unknown athletes with the chance to attain national and sometimes international fame. The Games also constitute an opportunity for the host city and country to showcase themselves to the world.

I agree with the sympathetic comments for the athletes that do it “the hard way” without drugs. The trouble is, the Amerikans want to reintroduce the cold war again and are using every possible means to discredit the Russians.

I seem to remember quite a lot of drug abuse amongst Western athletes in the not to distant past. The authorities supervising testing etc need closer scrutiny perhaps too?
