Driving in Cairo and on the peripherique is equally as frightening, in a fun kind of way.

    Two questions to ask :

Why do many drivers (mainly French) indicate to go ‘left’ at a roundabout when actually going ‘straight’ ?

Last evening on BBC1 weather at 1800hrs the weather lady only had one arm. Her disability diverted my attention from the weather, am I alone in feeling a bit ‘uncomfortable’ about this ?

You’re obviously in a microclimate, Bill, cos it’s s*ite here, too.

To show they’re not turning right, I guess, PJ, and I’m with you on the second question, it would make me uncomfortable as well.

The lady, who has just been on BBC News again a few moments ago is a very pretty lady so I would probably be oogling her rather than pay attention to the weather forecast normally but I still found it difficult to concentrate on the forecast as I was looking at her right arm which is cut off at the elbow.I actually feel quite guilty about it…..

I like to look on the bright side of life, Pete!

May be you could close your eyes and just listen to her, she doesn’t actually give the forecast in your neck of the woods anyway, or does she?

Fully in agreement with you, PJ, but why is it we have to feel guilty about feeling uncomfortable? I’m sure the bosses at the BBC thought things through before appointing her to the position. Perhaps Trevor McDonald’s early days with ITV news made certain people feel uncomfortable, too, but that passed.

I know she only has half an arm poor lass, but what is it that makes you feel uncomfortable about that?  I would say it could be a distraction for some. If you watch the Olympics that involve disabled people, does that make you feel the same?

Why “poor lass”, tigre? I’m sure she doesn’t need any sympathy, but perhaps the feeling of discomfort comes, as you say, from the distraction. As it has been put in this article online (difficult to read, doesn’t behave like a ‘normal’ web page), “Now a regular on screen, Lucy is a weather presenter who just happens to have one arm – rather than a one-armed weather presenter. This is progress and the BBC need to be applauded for promoting talent.”

Just a figure of speech really, VK, but no doubt like a lot of people with disabilities, her life so far hasn’t been all plane sailing.

It’s great that the BBC pioneer things like disability. My dad spent most of his life disabled and my late wife was disabled and in a wheelchair for the last few years of her life  and neither made any difference to me. I don’t think I feel sorry for Lucy and I certainly don’t consider her to be a ‘poor lass’. I don’t know why I feel put off by such a thing, it’s ridiculous !  I’ll get used to it the more I see her I think.

Tigre, the weather comes on before the new headlines which are of great interest to me both in France and the UK so it’s difficult to avoid.

I know what you mean, Pete, we are all different how we observe/react to certain things, as you say you’ll probably get used to seeing her. :rose:

Exactly, Pete and Tigre. I showed the youtube of her I found to my wife, her response was that it was a little bizarre but on gets used to things. I guess the unease is the shock of something so different from the norm.

That said, it’s only ever good-looking people who present news and weather, why are there never any non good-looking people in those positions?

Why do videos from smartphones shown on TV have the screen blurred out on both sides with only the middle third a watchable picture?

Ah, I have wondered that, too, BE, but I’ve realised that the first and the third third are actually the left and right extremities of the middle third, so why don’t they just show the middle third? Because otherwise the images seem too narrow for the TV screen is the answer.

“Why do loads of French drivers not understand how or why they should  use their car indicators ?”

Easy – they use the “code de mon itinéraire” instead of the code de la route.

The same as in the UK when they are using the Myway Code instead of the Highway Code

Why when wearing light coloured trousers in a restaurant does the toilet tap spray water and make me look as if I’ve peed myself?

This was hotly debated for years on AI and the only conclusion that makes any sense is that none of the authorities on either side of the Channel give a damn.  Someone used to have a website extolling the virtues of living in France and had a regularly updated section showing photos of UK reg cars with no tax disc, or a disc that was years out of date.  Supergrass?
