Hi everyone, we live in finistere and recently the top of our wood burner collapsed, it is an insert fire built into a brick fireplace. We would like to remove the old fire and replace it with a free standing one. Does anyone have an idea of how to remove the fireplace please

    Smash it out!

Sorry, but that is what I would do 😜

Once you haved taken the bricks out that surround the insert, it should slide out ( obviously with the flue disconnected), it will be heavy though! I don’t know if you live in France permanently, but the government were offering some rebate on certain wood burning stoves that are supplied  and fitted by a registered artisan and if you took the old insert to the dechetterie and got a certificate from them, the tax rebate was even higher. I don’t know if this scheme is still available.

Sorry, I read it as how to remove the brick fireplace. I was imagining just the surround! That is why I said to ‘smash it out’! 😩

I can get the old fire out, but I want to remove the 80″s fireplace that surrounds it. I am worried that it is load bearing etc. so could anyone suggest a good builder near chataeunoeuf – du fou

Hi Jon & Kate, I’ve sent you a private message with details of a builder.

    Good luck.
