I went to seven different schools and in six of them the food was disgusting and not fit for human consumption. It usually arrived in a van, lukewarm and overcooked, yuk………..they called it meals on wheels, we called it muck on a truck. My last school however, a secondary, was totally different. Everything was prepared ‘in house’ and was fresh, hot and mostly excellent. I enlisted on a rota of waiters who gave up their lunchbreak to serve the teachers with their lunch(which was the same as ours) in return for extra portions, that is how good it was!

I grew up in Sussex that’s why I remember it .also remember counting the prunes to “tinker tailor” etc.I think
when my children went to school I worked as a dinner lady and the food was so much nicer.
