Found delicious fresh Cherries in Lidl Guingamp today 500g only 1.99. I have seen them in the bigger supermarkets up to 18 Euros a kilo. Fresh Asparagus (which goes well with lamb) is also 1.99
Found a lady selling gluten free maize bread on Sunday at a vide grenier, she gets it made by a bakery in Pontivy and it is delicious, 1.80 a loaf and freezes well. It is very expensive in the supermarket and health food shops so this was a real find ( I have eaten the entire loaf though….)
I bought 4 melons for 4 euros in Lidl, Combourg <when the big stores were selling them at 4.95 each and they were very sweet and tasty.
non food – I bought 4 plug in anti moustique that work through sound ( no chemicals) for 3 euros each where as in the big stores they are over 9 euros each and these work very well – from GIFI St Malo.
I get lots of toiletries from Action St Malo which are the same brands – oral B toothpaste for eg – I have used for years and are a lot cheaper than in the big stores
Action has built a masssive new depot in Montauban which I suppose serves the south-west quarter of France.Going past on a weekend there are at least lorries parked.
British Corner Shop ( they are an online shop for your favourites) have a sale on at the moment with a lot of things at a £1. . I used them recently to get a load of dark chocolate Bounty Bars, very difficult to get here !
I know they have been mentioned somewhere before but the 1 euro boxes in Lidl’s of ‘spent’ items are brilliant value if you are there at the right time and have a sort through. I always look when in there and have been lucky on several occasions lately, had a brilliant one the other day with raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, bananas, pears and some tomatoes. Even after sorting through and discarding that which was no good I had enough for a big fruit salad, and to make a Raspberry Bakewell cake, a Banana, Raspberry and Chocolate cake, a pear and raspberry pie and we had tomatoes for tea. Can’t complain at that for 1 euro!
I’ve also recently had a box full of bread and croissants, nothing wrong with them, they went straight in the freezer.
You’ll not come out of the shop empty handed I can guarantee Sh-Sh. Mr. F. likes the tubes of Acrylic/silicone, the paint’s cheap too! I love all the homeware stuff and toiletries – have fun!
You’re welcome, Shapeshifter. As Fruitcake has said, you won’t leave empty handed, but then, your wallet won’t have taken a huge hit either.
BTW, if anyone is gluten free (apparently they’re good for lowering cholestrol too) or wants to try something different, ATM they have for 99 cents ZeroNoodles (Japanese idea, made from a plant, konjac) and they’re not bad at all. A funky smell when you open them, but you have to rinse them anyway and quite an enjoyable texture, not much in the way of taste, but it’s what you put with them, which is normal. Had spaghetti too, but I haven’t tried that.
Thanks to you tournesol. We found Action in Guingamp yesterday and were blown away. Bright, clean, spacious, and with a huge and varied range of stuff. Staff looked a bit worn out but still quick with a friendly smile. I bought a few small items that I normally buy from China that were actually cheaper. Quite a few big name brands from UK at about 2/3 the price.
Really pleased you found it, Shapeshifter, now you can see why it’s popular. If ever you are near Plerin, there is a bigger one, on the opposite side of the RN12 to Leclerc. Happy shopping!
BTW for all you lovers of steak – in our new local Lidl they are selling T-bone steaks. I don’t think I’ve seen them available here before. They are 9€60 (ish) each – I don’t know if that is expensive or not as I’ve never bought any.
Just a heads up that Action is open now. 😎 I know you wanted to go, Fruitcake. I went to Plerin, as I wanted to go to Picard too. The amount of traffic compared to when I last went out was quite staggering, cars everywhere. Arrived and there was a queue of about 10 parties, some groups of two, three and four, most wearing masks. After about 10 mins, there were three or four in front of me, when I was invited to jump the queue as the young lady manning the door noticed I was disabled, she offered me a wiped down wheelie basket and squirt of gel and off I went. They had a sort of one way system, that didn’t really work, but it was nice where it wasn’t crowded as is the norm. Got all that I went for and I must admit, it was nice to get out and give the car a bit of a run.
Snap tournesol! I went this morning too! The one in Loudéac was very well organised too as far as hand gel and a wiped with disinfectant wheelie basket. I got stocked up with their bio washing up liquid and other products that I like from there. It wasn’t too busy and the majority of people wore masks.
Much more traffic on the road!
I also went to Lidl to stock up with the things I like to get from there – totally different story there! Nothing as far as antivirus precautions were concerned except for social distancing strips at the checkout. Fortunately, most people were wearing masks and I made sure I kept a safe distance from those that didn’t, I asked the lady behind me in the queue, who wasn’t wearing a mask, to step back a bit more, she wasn’t too pleased but then went to another checkout!
I must say I found it all a bit scary and was pleased to be home and won’t need to go again for 2 or 3 weeks!
How funny, Fruitcake! It is a great shop for some things, glad you made it. The traffic was a shock to the system.
I went to Lidl last time out and apart from perspex shields by each check out and the floor markings, that was it. Thankfully, it wasn’t busy though, which was unusual to the norm.
I agree with you, but I think by isolating ourselves for weeks, it is strange and a tad nerve jangling when we venture out.
