Just heard that Ireland have lost Murry, Sexton and Ryan.

France must be strong favourites now?

    12th February 2021 at 6:16 pm #544627

ouch, that is a tough one for Ireland losing their play makers. I am guessing that they will switch to rucks and mauls and play a much more third row based game and play more ball in hand. Still a lot of leinster boys out there and only a fool would take them lightly !!

I feel like Ireland will take it, but Andy farrell will have to get it right on the night. If Emile Ntamack was partening his fellow Toulouse team mate Dupont then my money would be on The french, but a wounded and capable Ireland at the Aviva does swing the odds for me.

As for Scotland – Wales I just can not call that one at all. Two fairly equal teams on paper, though if Gareth davies is on good form and shows a couple of his breakaways then there is plenty of speed and power to support him. Wainwright albeit not having the power and experience of poor old lyds is still probably the fastest openside flanker in world rugby.  The big battle is going to be between Tips ( Justin Tipuric ) and Hamish watson who would probably be my first choice openside for the lions shirt. My heart says a win for Wales, but my head says dont be hasty. Going to be one hell of a tough game.

Will be shocked if England do not walk it. If mako was coming out of injury against an italian side of yesteryear I would be more concerned, but this current Azurri pack has not got the ghiraldini’s and castrogiavani’s to challenge the England tight five. If parisse was stearing the ship then maybe there would be more danger. Easy win for home team at the temple of rugby I think !!

As always so much to look forward to in a weekends six nations with everything to play for and no doubt some top drawer rugby to be enjoyed. Roll on tomorrow :-)

Jamie, your anaysis and knowledgeable comments are spot on. Better than we will get on TV on the day. You should be paid for it.

    Enjoy the action.

    12th February 2021 at 7:53 pm #544635

Thats a kind comment that has made me smile thank you. What I know about rugby may fill a book but what I do not know would fill many librairies !! Best leave the paid reviews, previews and analysis to the experts :-)

Am happy to share my views with others and exchange comment and banter for free. The smiles are payment enough for me.

There are a few online vids doing the rounds nowadays and the one that I tend to click on most and enjoy very much for an informative and mostly unbias views are by twocentsrugby on youtube. Have been enjoying his vids for quite a while now and communicate with him quite often.

There are many others but most are way too egotistical for my liking and dripping with Bias and often lack the fair play mentality. Check out his work one day if you have not already. In fact I shall pop you a link up on a topical video now so that you know who he is. Here is the preview for the England – Italy game.

A must for any rugby fan.   Squidge rugby on youtube puts out some good vids too.

    Enjoy.

    A demain xx

Settling in for the matches now.

Scotland V Wales is second of the mark at 5:45 pm French (CET) time, perceived temps anticipated at around the -8 c mark with some snow forecast.

Maybe a game which might be influenced by handling errors?

    Looking forward to it though.

My head says Scotland  for the win, but my heart is for Wales.

My fire is lit, have popped the top of my first beer and am watching all the prematch video”s and previews on the net.

Wales have got 21 injuries in total so are going into the scotland game with pretty much our last choice of players so really a big thank you is owed to Warren gatland (gats) for the time and effort that he put in to build some depth into the welsh set up. I think that we are fielding what looks like a fairly impressive test team. We will be going into this as the underdogs which will be to our advantage as scotland in recent years have lacked consistancy when it comes to winning consecutive games and historically fail badly when they are the odds on winners.

They are also a better looking team and more established squad than they have been for a while, but also are missing a couple of key players so all in all it should be a tight contest.

France have got a chance of a win in Ireland if they get rid of any complacency before it kills their game as Ireland will be bringing a hard and physical contest to the game which France did not have to deal with last week and it is so much easier to throw clever little passes around to create space when one is on the front foot with a few tries in the pocket and a team that is not challenging in the combat area. This will be a far more interesting game than their last one and much more of a test.

Will stick with what I have said so far about Englands home game against Italy, I think it will become a good old fashioned hammering though would dearly love the Italians to show up and make a game of it,but certainly on paper there is no comparison between the two.

Wont be long before the coverage starts for the first game on itv or france 2 with the later game being shown on S4C, BBC and France 2. Enjoy your afternoon of oval festivities. xx

Yes, I think France are interesting, if they turn up and keep their discipline I think they will beat Ireland. That scrum half always seems to be in the right place and he is outstanding. He seems to have supporting players close by whenever he makes a break. France are my pick for the tournament at this stage.

I am going with Scotland (sorry Jamie) in the Wales game and would like Italy to upset England to force changes with the current thinking. They made too many handling errors last week and missed too many tackles. England had no ball last week and the backs have not been used, except to kick possession away in their normal manner. Farrell as normal when England are not dominant failed to show any leadership ideas or flair and as usual went too high in the tackle that led to the try. I cannot see why he is even in the squad! I can see todays game being much closer than predicted. Equally, England could turn up and run in a massive score.

Thanks for the link Jamie, it is interesting.

No apologies needed my friend. It is more about good sport for me than a welsh win, though I dont mind seeing them from time to time if I must be honest.

Glad you enjoyed twocents. He puts up vids before and after all the games and as you will of noticed gives a really informative and relatively simple to follow bit of blah blah about every match from a rugby fans viewpoint and not that of a fan of a certain team.He obviously leans towards the all blacks with him being a kiwi but still reports on their games in a non bias way. He’s a good bloke to follow.  I try to watch most of them and a few of squidge rugby video’s too as he is a really funny guy at times and has very good technical knowledge. Between the two of them and my own viewing it keeps me fairly well up to date with what is going on.

Nearly rugby oclock, best open another beer. Have fun x

Is it me, or were there several forward passes made there by both sides before tries were awarded which weren’t spotted by the ref and other officials?

    13th February 2021 at 4:13 pm #544732

Yes Gleaner, its been poor refereeing. The first try for England appeared to be a double movement and held up.

Forward passes and a possible trip and a clearout by the neck all went unchecked.

    13th February 2021 at 4:14 pm #544733

@Bonjour,  thankyou for that.  I thought I was perhaps being overtly bias  there for a moment.

    13th February 2021 at 4:17 pm #544735

I picked up on a couple too,so no it is not just you. I think both teams are playing a better game than last week though England still making a few too many mistakes but building in confidence. The Italian try a few minutes in was a shocker which made me wonder which way the game was going for a second, though it is going down the most logical route. England fans should get ready for a try fest as England will be trained to far better health than the Azurri lads and have more to give in the last half hour. Would be happy if the Italians can get another try or even two in. English pack are crushing their forwards at the mo !

    And off we go…

    13th February 2021 at 5:19 pm #544740

Improvement by both so well done to both Italy and England. It was a better game than I expected which is always nice. Got to dash for a quick wash and shave before singing oclock. Bread of heaven, bread of heaven, feed me til I want no more ;-)

intelligent team play by scotland and some great individual talent gives them the deserved half time lead. Wales starting to read their strategy though are lacking punch in both attack and defense because of third to fourth choice midfield players at 12 and 13. Going to be a great second half and how its looking I can see wales taking it unless scotland change their game plan. Going to be a good 40 mins of rugby.

    13th February 2021 at 6:42 pm #544743

It’s going  to be a cracker of a second half. Imagine what it would be like if Murrayfield was full?!

    13th February 2021 at 7:42 pm #544744

What is  the longest anyone has held their breath for? Because I think  I have just broken the record.

    Immense respect for Scotland.

    Well done Wales.

That game is a good example of what I love about rugby. It had a bit of everything and went to the wire.

To come back from 17-3 to win 25-24 showed great charecter by Wales and they had to work very hard to stem the blue tide with some ferocious work in defence. Red card or not I think that Wales had shifted the momentum and were going to take it as I said at half time, but it is always such a shame when a red appears as it dims the glory somewhat. Especially when that red in old rules could of easily been a yellow. I thought it was a bit harsh but do understand why they went with it as the players protection is the first concern of the game.

Both teams deserved great credit in many area’s and there were many things that could of changed this game of fine margins, but even with luck or without, it takes a lot of work to come back and close out a game and wales showed great strength to do so.

Was delighted to see LRZ ( louis rees zammit ) get man of the match. He really has got a great future ahead and has got a bit of x factor that we have not seen that much of in the game since a young stuart hogg or Liam williams. That second try was far more amazing than most people will ever realize in the skills needed to make it happen.

The tournament is still looking very open as any team except Italy looks like they could go onto win it or even get it wrong. Definately a good and exciting tournament ahead for us to enjoy and hopefully tomorrows game will be as good a spectacle as the scotland-wales clash.

I enjoyed it very much and hope that you guys did too.

    Roll on tomorrow.

    Good night all xx

ps; Gleaner, I have not read the guiness book of records in years but can claim to having held my breath for eighty minutes a few times B-)

It was a very good afternoon of entertainment and there were positives for all four sides that played.

For me the most notable was the standard or lack of it of the referees. I’m thinking Nigel needs to come out of retirement, even if only to train the less experienced refs.

I know that the law regarding feeding the ball into the scrum has been largely ignored over the years but to feed it between the props legs is just not on, unless the law has changed I missed it?

As for the sending off, my interpretation of contact with the head, is when the head shoulder or arm of the incoming player comes into contact with the players head. The officials obviously were looking at different footage to that which was shown.

As has been mentioned there were plenty of forward passes.

It is outrageous that Farrell got away with gobbing off questioning the ref without punishment. He would not have tried it with Nigel , or Romain.

It was sad to see Willis so badly hurt and by a player on the floor and therefore out of the game, but the referees ignore that law. Earlier a player had been rolled out by the neck which also went unpunished.

I have France as firm favourites for the tournament though as Jamie says it is now open.

It was refreshing to see the young Welsh winger, and the skill he showed with his second try in checking and cutting inside when most would have dived for the line showed maturity beyond his years. He has a very promising future.

I hope the injured recover quickly and am looking forward to this afternoons contest. I think it will be a good one.

A last thought, before the match Johnny Wilkinson said questions need to be asked of the England players as to what they bring to the table. I asked myself this of Farrell but could not find an answer. Even his goal kicking is these days nowhere near the required standard of an international.
