    Never been near a horse.
Big, frightening and more intelligent than me.
Now I have a part time job shifting them round the country.
This evening I am with a Dam who will give birth tonight.
My ear to her belly, both heartbeats.
    Ba…baboom, ba…baboom.
    She lets me touch her.
    My friend Jerome, explains.
Her ears are back, she has stopped eating and the milk leaking onto my fingers is yellow, not white.
    Everything is good to go.
Her head is on my shoulder and brown eyes search my soul.
    She trusts me.
Home and awaiting the phone call to run and assist the birth.
    Cannot wait.
    Oh yes!

    Cannot sleep, too excited.
4 am and I am stood by the horse, her name is Jonquille.
Jerome is pacing the heavily strawed floor looking tired and the foal shows no sign of arriving.
Jerome has gone to get some sleep and I am on guard duty.
She is Anglo/Arab and has won 7 of her 19 races.
Leaving her with me who knows nothing of horses, is a supreme act of trust.
Everybody is hoping the foal will be male.
The genetics are very good, winning parents and grandparents.
She cares not and just wants it over.
    Head down, she is tired.
Talking to her, encouragement and comfort, she looks at me with huge brown eyes.
Jerome arrives at 7am and laughs.
I am stood, still talking to her, completely forgetting she is used French not English.
Scratching her under the chin, head on my shoulder, she has the collar of my fleece in her mouth.
The equine equivalent of holding hands, I suppose.
Still waiting for the phone to ring.

Beautifully written as always, you just have a way of saying it how it is! The gorgeous horse has made a friend she will never forget, and you may just get to see the miracle of a foal coming into this world 🐎

Maybe they will have to perform a C section on the mare if she cannot deliver the foal herself.   Fingers crossed Stinky.

    Hi all.
    Jonquille is proper fed up.
Her foal is large and when the contractions start it hurts.
Apparently horses can, right up to the last ten minutes override the contractions, a sort of get out of danger card if a predator would be about.
At home at the mo, awaiting the phone call, if tonight is a no show, induction is the next step, but we hope for tonight.
First time I have ever seen a horse waddle.
My money is a boy, but what do I know.
This morning she had her head out of the stable door, resting on my shoulder, calm but tired.
    I am teaching her English.
    Updates as soon as.

I think you’ve brought some of the magic from your childhood with you Stinky and Jonquille trusts you as those children did, put your blue wellies on when you go back to her and I’m sure all will be well. Bless her I hope she can give birth without intervention, I’m sure your presence is of great comfort to her. :rose:

Been in that situation, had to resort to a type of winch with the neighbour’s horse, rope around the foal’s ankles and gentle winching, he was badly positioned to slip out as Nature intended. Fingers crossed.

    Ta all.
One of us has to be in the stall with her at all times.
Sometimes they lie down to foal, but have their bum in the corner, a no no for the foal, so the dodgy bit is going behind her and shoving so she goes to the middle, away from the wall.
I am only there so Jerome can get some sleep, and perhaps shove her arse away from the corner, whilst bellowing for help.
    Such a learning curve.

    Another long, fruitless night.
Two hour shifts with her and she has not slept in two days.
Over the phone the vet is of the opinion that though she is ready to go, the foal is not in the correct position and he will be out to us as soon as he can.
Still trying to teach her English.
Update will follow as soon as….

Vet says she is fine, as is the foal at the moment.
He is unwilling to push things along with drugs and so here we go again.
Jonquille looks at me, then Jerome and I just know what she is thinking.
    Wish her luck Peeps.

    Half past ten.
    One am shift awaits.
Vet is unconcerned, they do this he says.
I google it and he is right.(Me checking the vet out?)
Although she is tired and fed up, it is her holding things up.
The foal is ready and is now urinating in the amniotic sac, which changes the smell of mum’s pee, as she is acting as a filter.
Toto, his dog, a veteran of many foalings is now sleeping in the stall with her.
Jerome is beat,I get it easy, I get the whole day off, just helping in the later hours.
Went to her about 7pm, hand over nostrils and she now knows me.
She likes to be scratched under her jaw bones and she chews my hair.
    A half ton of gentleness.
Her understanding of English is crap, I wish she would pay attention.
Get a bloody move on Jonquille.
    Night all.
