    A plea for help!!!

    Can anyone recommend some tips on how to stop coughing using natural remedies if possible? Had it for about 5 days, wife is threatening to smother me with a pillow if I keep her awake any longer during the night!

    It depends if it’s a tickly cough or not Paul but here are the suggestions in my marvelous book on vinegar and it’s 1001 uses;

    Tickly cough = 2 teaspoons of cider vinegar and 2 of honey mixed with a glassful of water taken before meals

    A cough that will not stop = a mix called Witches Brew – Mix 1 tablespoon butter, one of sugar and one of vinegar, melt together and take while still warm.

    And it says for the really brave, or desperate, try this one = mix half cup of apple cider vinegar, half a cup of water, 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper and 4 teaspoons of honey. Take a tablespoon when the cough starts and another at bedtime.

    I cannot guarantee any of them Paul but nothing ventured, nothing gained :-)   Someone else may have some suggestions, hope you find something effective.

    Have a hot toddy just before you go to bed, Paul, it will help you sleep.

    A good shot of whisky, lemon and lots of honey made with boiling water.

    Or…. ginger and honey tea. Thin slices of ginger (or finely chopped/grated if you like spicey) in a mug, pour on some boiling water, leave to steep for 3-4 minutes, then stir in a good tablespoon of honey, more if you want. Add some fresh lemon for a vitC boost and added flavour if you fancy.

    I have the same thing at the moment. It is worse at night and first thing in the morning. Your local pharmacy will have some effective cough syrup which loosens things up and helps to clear the inflamation. I am afraid these summer colds/coughs do seem to drag on a bit.

    I would have said about the cough syrup JP but Paul was hoping for a natural remedy. If going down the cough syrup route you need either one for a dry cough or one for a ‘productive’ cough. (They often start ‘dry’ and then turn to ‘productive’ so may need both!!) Hope you all soon feel better :rose:

    Thanks all,

    I’ve copied and pasted all of these suggestions into a word doc, and will start working thru the list!

    Personally with a cough that has lasted this long and being described as “from hell” I would be going to the Dr in case it is a symptom of tonsilitis/respiratory infection

    Paul, unless you have an bacterial infection I can’t see that the doctor would be able to do much. Is you chest feeling tight and are you coughing up any phlegm? Some of these viruses these days seem to leave a nasty long lasting cough, natural remedies and the spare bedroom for a while may be. :cry:

    If your chest hurts when you cough and as tigre says you’re coughing up phlegm, especially if it’s of a dubious colour and you feel decidedly off colour then I’d go to the doc, otherwise take your pick of the natural remedy choices above. Unless there is infection the doctor will probably prescribe Paracetamol and cough syrup, however, none of us are medical experts and you did only request remedies for a cough Paul, so you must make your decision when you feel the need.

    Yep, coughing up loads of gunk, went to the docs who prescribed antibiotics but asked if I can persevere without taking them for another week. She was of the opinion the body is best placed to sort these things, with antibiotics only if no other choice. OK with me, I don’t want to take them unless really necessary. The liberal dispensation of them by Docs in the past has resulted in the super-bug” which is proving hard to beat.

    And here is another natural cure she was fond of…..sucking small lozenges of raw ginger. That’s now on the list of cures!

    Well, I hope one of the remedies or, if it comes to it, the antibiotics (I’m with you and the doc, if they can be avoided so much the better, but an infection is no fun) soon get it sorted.
