Not really telling us much more than we already knew at the time of the trial but an interesting read, a good plug for his book anyway !

Was the law an ass ?

Maybe but what more could the court have done to prevent one of them from ending back inside ? Hindsight is a great thing of course…

Not sure what was to be gained by naming them other than to provide grist to the demonisation of them mill in the tabloid press which continues to this day. It was an unusual decision to do so even at the time apparently.

There was a subsequent child by child killing where the identities were kept secret which prevented a trial by media situation.

They did a terrible, terrible thing, nobody will ever know why but they were children themselves at the time but were tried as adults which doesn’t seem right.

Why were they named ? I thought minors were exempt from that ?

May be they were tried as adults because of other atrocities they’d committed that the public never knew about. Often minds such as these children start off with animal abuse etc, we as the public will never know the other crimes they may have committed. There must have been a reason for it.

It was the decision of the presiding judge PJ, not sure why

It seems they weren’t named until after they’d been convicted, according to the non-tabloid Guardian, and the decision of the trial judge to name them was controversial. And despite the fact that you, I or Bob the Cat can edit it, Wikipedia’s coverage seems to be fairly comprehensive.

Yes VK, the Wiki info is very comprehensive and the Grauniad piece from Deborah Orr is really interesting, more interesting than the Times’s publicity gig. It’s always tempting to ask what lessons have been learned but in this extreme case maybe none at all because of the rarity of the brutal murder by kids ?

I don’t think we can learn sufficient lessons to say, for example, this child or that is a potential danger, but hopefully lessons have been learnt for the trials and subsequent supervision of those accused at a young age of such serious crimes.

    Quite agree VK.

I really can’t see the use in publicising the names of the two kids.

Yes PJ, the Orr article was very good. interesting about brain scans finding anomalies in the brains of psychopaths. I don’t really accept the biblical concept of good and evil, must be something in our make-up.
