I have just found this film of Paris taken in the 1890’s (from 1896 to 1900) and would love to think that I could see Mrs G’s great grandfather in it. He was a hackney cab driver in the 1870’s in London and subsequently came to France shortly after and done the same here.

I never knew Paris had a moving sidewalk back then. Interesting.

What a marvellous film! Thanks Gleaner, amazing that there was a film with all the sound effects made at that time, very interesting, I loved that!

Thanks Deboer and Fruitcake, I’ currently looking through many of the other old reels of film on this persons channel, one or two of which are throwing up surprises. For example, this one of Kyoto taken in 1929 – some 54 years before I lived there – shows, at the 11.15 sec mark – what I remember to be the Tetsugaku-no-michi, or the philosopher’s walk. As a young student in Kyoto, back nearly 36 years ago now, it was a place where I remember I used to frequent a wonderful restaurant called Okeeneeya and was first introduced to “Kangaroo steaks!”

Love old film like this. The thing that struck me most was the soundtrack, just the sound of horses hooves and people’s voices, so different from the traffic din of today. Also how smartly dressed everyone was…
