Ad break during a programme on French TV. In 1997, obligatory military service in France disappeared. In the first or second year of his term, Francois Hollande introduced the option for young people, often disenfranchised from society, to do a year’s voluntary military service (le SMV, Service Militaire Volontaire), during which time they have the chance to learn a trade, get their driver’s licence and learn a military way of life. Does such a system/thing exist in the UK?

Mores the pity  but we have the Terriorial Army, but as far  as I know it doesn’t equate to the French System .

Bald Eagle, obviously something new, then? 27 days is a bit short, mind you.

I think the 27 days is a minimum requirement in the UK to join the Territorials which is normally a voluntary option in addition to your regular job with expenses and a retainer paid, like the part-time firemen. Not  full time  like the French option.

National service was stopped because countries can’t afford it. When unemployment benefit was first mooted in the late forties, plan was six months benefit’s then retrain or lose benefit’s, dropped because the country couldn’t afford it if unemployment passed one million. All these things seem good ideas, but the state cannot afford it, as in us.

France is a prime example as is the UK in some respects, France cannot afford the high levels of benefit’s it hands out, and the UK cannot afford the levels of social care it offers the old folks.
